The Art Nouveau Ideal

15 October 2017 - 12 January 2013

During the first phase of the episcopal palace’s renovation, MUDO – Musée de l’Oise is highlighting its extraordinary collections by displaying its collection of Art Nouveau works at the Palais Lumière in Évian.

Art is in everything! Lauded by artists supporting new art at the turn of the last century, this slogan illustrates their desire to create objects, decors and architecture combining functionality and aestheticism. The Art Nouveau architect models interior space with the light from windows and adapts his décor to meet the needs of modern life.  His motifs take inspiration from nature (insects, flowers, etc.) and develop an aesthetic of ornamentation.  Between 1890 and 1910, England, France, Belgium and, a little later, the United States adopted this style, which did away with the eclecticism of the Second Empire.
The exhibit spaces in the Palais Lumière in Évian offer the visitor a complete re-creation of the emblematic dining rooms of Gustave Serrurier-Bovy and Henry Bellery-Desfontaines together with its décor painted by Henri Martin.
